Clary sage gets its name from the Latin word “clarus,” meaning “clear.” In the Middle Ages, it was referred to as “clear eyes.” At this time, clary sage oil was used for sight, said to have helped with improving strained or tired eyes.
In Germany they refer clary sage seeds as “muscatel sage” due to its effect as a flavour enhancer for muscatel wine. Clary sage would also sometimes replace hops in beer and lead to an enhanced state of intoxication.
