A not so well-known fact is that geranium essential oil does not come from the type of ‘geranium’ plants found growing in gardens It actually comes from various plants belonging to the Pelargonium family, and there are several different ones used to produce essential oil.
This mix up was caused back in 1737 by the father of modern botanical nomenclature Carolus Linnaeus
The first Pelargonium recorded in history was in 1672.ships surgeons brought back Pelargoniums back around this time. In the 18th century hybrids were introduced to South Africa and slowly they spread around the world.
In African bush medicine, Pelargoniums were believed to be astringent, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and styptic. The medicine men in Sotho and Zulu tribes created a paste from crushed leaves to treat wounds and abscesses, and used the roots in an infusion to wash patients. Used externally, Pelargonium leaves were also used to treat neuralgia, throat infections and skin conditions such as ringworm, ulcers and rashes. It was taken internally to help treat diarrhoea, dysentery, colic, gastroenteritis, haemorrhage, menstrual problems, kidney and bladder disorders
The best way to sum up Geranium Essential oil is “Balancing” However it does also contain powerful antibacterial properties These properties are invaluable when helping to treat cases of acne, burns, or wounds to the skin. Geranium oil is also reported to help treat fungal infections too, for example athletes’ foot and ringworm.
When used to care for the skin, geranium essential oil has the amazing ability to normalise sebum levels. if skin is too dry it helps produce more sebum to moisturise, if the skin is oily, it helps reduce sebum production. This makes it perfect for people with combination skin or suffering with conditions like eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis.
Its Balancing qualities may also help on a n emotional level, helping to ease feelings of depression, anger, stress as well as PMS and the Menopause
